States of South Sudan
South Sudan is divided into 10 states, which were created out of the three historic provinces of Bahr el Ghazal, Equatoria and Greater Upper Nile. They are further divided into 86 counties.
Bahr el Ghazal
This region in South Sudan's northwest includes the states of Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Western Bahr el Ghazal, Lakes, and Warrap. According to the disputed 2008 census conducted under the Republic of the Sudan,[1] Western Bahr al Ghazal is the least populous of South Sudan's states.[2]
Equatoria
This southern region includes the states of Western Equatoria, Central Equatoria, and Eastern Equatoria. The state capital of Central Equatoria, the smallest South Sudanese state by area, is Juba, which also serves as the national capital of South Sudan.
Greater Upper Nile
This region in northern and eastern South Sudan includes the states of Jonglei, Unity, and Upper Nile. Jonglei is the largest state of South Sudan by area, as well as the most populous, according to the 2008 census.
